8 BEST Things to do in Mussoorie Uttarakhand, India

Located at a distance of 35 kilometers from Dehra-doon, Mussoorie is a wonderful hill station in Uttarakhand situated at a height of 2005 meters above the sea level. It is situated at the foothills of the Himalayas and is known as the Queen of the Hills.
Mussoorie is one the top hill stations in India, famous for weekend getaway, honeymoon destinations, Himalayan views and Mall Road.

The lush green hills, the varied flora and fauna and the majestic view of The Shivalik Range and The Doon Valley attracts thousands of tourists both domestic and International tourists to Mussoorie each year. It is not only famous for its scenic beauty but also is developed into an important center for education and business.
Mussoorie was always my summer getaway during childhood days. We had a beautiful large house as seen in the video. So the entire family used to spend summer at the hills. This was.. like when I was 8 years old and till I 18. Those days we had horses on camel's back road and skating rings, which also reminds me that I learnt how to skate from Mussoorie.
So in 2018, I decided to pay a visit again (finally) to see the city around once again. Must have been after 20 odd years, but I did go. The video above clearly shows you around the city, its people, food, shopping, meeting locals etc. I did enjoy my trip but not like it was when I was a child.. The entire city is commercialized, there are shops everywhere, although the old ones still exist, but new restaurants have bombarded the city so much that there's hardly any beauty left.
Below are 8 Top things you can do, if you plan to visit the hills (the list is tried and tested) --
1. The Mall Road
Most famous promenade in Queen of the Hills, Mussoorie is The Mall. At an height of above 2000 meters, The Mall is major attraction. Almost every visitor of Mussoorie have to visit the beautiful Mall Road which stretches from Picture Palace at east to the Library at the west. The Mall is famous for picturesque viewpoints providing amazing views of Doon Valley. Benches and lamp posts are fixed at every corner o every viewpoint at the Mall. Colonial style houses kept reminding of the British architecture. There are old styled video game parlors and balloon shooting for kids entertainment. For toddlers there used to prams with a coolie taking them up and down, however, now there are battery operated mini cars where the person holding the remote takes them up and down the hill. One can purchase memorable items from shops located on both sides of the road.

2. Gun Hill - Second highest peak of Mussoorie
At the second top peak of the Mussoorie, Gun Hill is popular place among photographers and Himalayan viewers as it provides a 360 degree view of the Himalayan ranges namely Bunderpunch, Srikantha, Pithwara and Gangothri group etc. One can also witness top view of Gun Point with other pictuesque views of Mussoorie and Doon Valley. Located at 400 feet above the Mall, Gun Point is at 20 minutes distance through the Mall. Tourists and people also like to enjoy Ropeway ride to Gun Point. Gun Point also has a water reservoir (so its said) but during pre independence days, there was a gun mounted on this top. That gun used to be fired at mid day to enable people to adjust their watches.
Ropeway Price - Rs 75 for roundtrip ; Timings - 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

3. Lovely Omelette Center
Mussoorie’s most famous eatery is also its smallest - a cubbyhole along the Mall that serves what many say are the best omelettes in India. The speciality is the cheese omelette, with chilly, onion and spices, served over toast, but the maestro at the frying pan will whip up a chocolate omelette on request. On weekends you might have to wait. It's been in the family since 1918, originally as an egg shop before opening as a restaurant in 1975. The shop has been awarded by Lonely Planet, Times Food and Zomato. I was at his shop everyday to eat cheese omelette and waited in the que too for hours.
Opening Time - 8:00 am

4. Camel Back Road
A beautiful peaceful walk under the nature will always boost calmness and inner peace. Camel Back Road provides the same experience in Mussoorie. This 3 km long road is named as Camel Back Rd due to the presence of natural layout of rocks shaped like a camels hump at the end of road. (and guess what? I have never been able to spot it). Starting from Library Point to Kulri Bazaar, Camel Back Road is one of the must visit place. One can witness a romantic sunrise and sunset from this road easily. A perfect way to walk with nature. It used to be very crowded earlier during summer morning and evenings with horses for people who were unable to do long walks. However, now one does not see a single horse. The entire road is paved well and looked after by Sant Nirankari Mission. I walked the entire stretch on foot and met many foreigners along the way. I think there's a point from where one can hire bicycles, if one does not want to walk. Its much better than using cars in the hills.

5. Sant Nirankari Mandal Canteen
A place run by Sant Nirankari Mission, we were told to stop here for refreshments, mainly for paranthas. The place is located mid way on Camel Back Road and is looked after very well. Its clean and has self service. We ordered different kinds of paranthas, like Aloo, Paneer and Mixed Vegetables with Lassi (curd based drink). The parantha is a good size and served with pickle. You must also get their Ladoo's packed, they are delicious.

6. Landour
Isn’t it odd that the British-era cantonment of Landour, 6km from Mussoorie, is named after Llanddowror, a faraway village in southwest Wales?
The story goes back to the early 19th century, when the Gurkha conquest of Kumaon–Garhwal led to the intervention of the British, who moved from the plains of Dehradun to create a military sanatorium in the hills. Today, with its crisp mountain air, charming walks and hillsides covered with gabled bungalows and churches, this quiet nook in the Himalayas is home to leading writers such as Ruskin Bond, Bill Aitken, Allan Sealy, Hugh and Colleen Gantzer, and film personalities Tom Alter, Victor Banerjee and Vishal Bhardwaj. If you turn back the pages of history, Landour’s literary affair is not new. The attractions at Landour are Lal Tibba, Char Dukkan (for ginger lemon tea) and The Clock-tower also known as Ghanta ghar. But be careful with your camera's, there are loads of monkeys in this area.

7.  Name Key Chain
On the Mall road, go further up when the hill becomes a little flat, its like a straight road, there is a tiny shop on your left hand side that makes key chains. His speciality is that he will write your name on a piece of rice grain. I got made for all my family members, as it used to be a memoir of Mussoorie. Prices vary on the selection based on the key-chain.

8. Kulri Bazaar Soup Shop
Discovered a tiny little shop that serves only Soup. The two variants are Sweet Corn (veg and non veg) and Tomato soup with croutons. One a cold windy evening, sipping on a glass of soup in the hills while watching people walking on the Mall, turns out to be peaceful and wonderful. The soup costs Rs 30 only and the owner makes around 500 liters of each soup, everyday. The next time you are at the Mall, do pay him a visit. He sits next to the key chain maker.
